In old times there were severe punishments for bakers that cheated with the weight of their products. So often, when a customer ordered a dozen, the bakers added one extra. Just to make sure they couldn’t get into trouble.
This phenomenon is well documented in the UK. However, I have also seen bakers still do this in Austria, Germany, and Italy. Good traditions die hard.
